The Vikings in County Louth
Archaeologist Eamonn P. Kelly's recent lecture for the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society
Just a short post to highlight this recent lecture by Eamonn P. Kelly which I found thoroughly enjoyable and useful. Presented to the CLAHS1 on 2 March 2023, the Society has uploaded it to their Youtube channel. A link to the presentation is included below.
I found the section (commencing at 16:00) detailing the Viking settlement of Linn Duachaill (Annagassan), and its archaeological remains, particularly fascinating. Enjoy!
Archaeologist Eamonn P. Kelly presents a lecture titled The Vikings and Co Louth in which he looks at the nature of Viking activity in Louth and discusses the strategic importance of Louth for the Vikings in the context of their activities around Ireland and Britain. Eamonn ‘Ned’ Kelly is a professional archaeologist and historian who worked for the National Museum of Ireland and served as Keeper of Irish Antiquities from 1992 until his retirement in 2014. He has published extensively on a wide range of Irish archaeological topics, including the Viking influence on Irish culture, and was one of the leads for the archaeological investigations at Linn Duachaill. This lecture was recorded during an online presentation on 2 March 2023 for the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society.
Incidentally, I thoroughly recommend joining the Society. It is a bargain at €20 a year, and this includes a copy of their excellent journal which is produced annually. https://clahs.ie/membership-annual/
