Some Old Drogheda Society Events: 7 & 8 July 2024
Some big anniversaries, a 1916 book launch and a lecture on the Dominican Friars of Medieval Drogheda
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the excellent Drogheda Museum at Millmount in Drogheda Co. Louth and the 60th anniversary of the Old Drogheda Society who are the force behind the museum.
To mark this occasion a day of celebration is being held on 7 July 2024 from 12:00 to 17:30. A host of activities are planned, and admission to the museum and the tower are free. Free car parking is also available. For further information, see the flyer below.
The highlight of the day for many will likely be the launch of a new publication, written by the museum and society chairman, Mr. Des Grant. The book, “Drogheda Fighters in the GPO” promises to shed new light on Drogheda’s links with the 1916 rising.
On the following night, 8 July at 19:00 Fr. Conor McDonough OP will be giving a lecture in the Governors House at Millmount “Preachers in Pontana - The Dominican Friars of Medieval Drogheda”.
Fr. McDonough and the Irish Dominicans have been producing an excellent historical series on YouTube called “Treasure Ireland”, addressing historical aspects of Ireland’s counties. Louth has featured, and a number of videos addressed Drogheda in particular. I have linked these videos below.
Both of these events are sure to be excellent, attend if you can!
